Honor the Earth: Initiatives: Buffalo: What's New: Babbit Refused to Meet with Tribes

In coordination with Pyramid Communications of Seattle, Honor the Earth organized a sign-on letter to Secretary of Interior Bruce Babbit about Yellowstone buffalo. The letter supported Native peoples' requests for an end to the killings and for meaningful participation in decision making around the future of the herd. More than 45 national, regional and local organizations added their names to this letter (see signers, below).

Despite this show of support, federal agencies have again closed the door on Native peoples. Babbit's office will not discuss the Yellowstone issue with tribes, the National Park Service will hold no further consultation meetings and the final Environmental Impact Statement, now at the editors, will include capture and slaughter in all of the management alternatives proposed. Please express your outrage at this injustice! Send an e-mail letter to Babbit by sending a postcard , or write: Secretary Babbit, Department of Interior, Washington, DC.
